Werribee Cemetery has served the Wyndham Area community for more than 160 years with majority of the community's final resting place located here. The cemetery contains different areas such as the rose gardens, and different places for burial including Lawn Graves, a variety of Roman Catholic and Presbyterian areas and the Mausoleum.
The history of the cemetery goes back to 1864 when it was first established. Around this time, it was considered a rural cemetery and showed many hardships within the early farming community. In February 1875, a caretaker's cottage built out of weatherboard with a corrugated iron roof was built which would soon be occupied in November 1876 by Jeremiah Dee, caretaker of the cemetery. He left after complaints were made in 1881 the family destroyed the much of the cemetery's acacia fence for firewood.
A lawn area was established abt. the 1970s along with a Mausoleum around the late 90s. Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust soon took control of the cemetery in 2010 after it was managed by the local council. Most notable people buried in the cemetery include William Ison, pioneer of Werribee. Elizabeth Hopper, railway gatekeeper which Hoppers Crossing was named after. As well as Rowland Carter, founder of Carter Bros. once named the largest poultry farm in the southern hemisphere, and a major contributor to Werribee's development. It also has large number of Italian graves, reflecting migration of Italian farming families from Sicily, many buried in the monumental graves and the Mausoleum.
At an unknown time, burial records between 1865 to 1909 were lost in a fire. The cemetery trust has inspected and updated the cemetery site on who's buried within the grounds, however some still remain unknown to this day.
