The County House Cemetery was the interment site for residents of the Cayuga County Poor House. The headstones are numbered beginning with the burial of John Geach on September 30, 1873 who was number 1. There are no names on the stones. The stones are numbered 1 through 236. Not all residents of the Poor House are buried there. Some residents were buried elsewhere. The Cayuga County Historians Office has the records.
The cemetery is located behind the County Sheriff's office and the County Jail. It was rediscovered in 1988 when a prisoner escaped and searchers tripped over the headstones as they were searching for him.
The site is maintained by the inmates of the jail under the supervision of the Sheriff's office.
It is advisable to check in with the sheriff before visiting the cemetery.
