Hopetoun Cemetery or the Roman Catholic Chapel Yard, was the first formal cemetery in Bacchus Marsh. It is the oldest known Catholic cemetery in regional Victoria and one of only a small number of surviving churchyard cemeteries in the state. The first Catholic Church, dedicated to St. Laurence O'Toole, was located on the present cemetery site. The ruins are still visible. The earliest known burial, Jeremiah Connell, age 4, was in April 1851. In spite of much opposition, the cemetery was closed in January of 1894 by the Board of Public Health for non-adherence to the requirements of the Cemeteries Act of 1890 – it had no Trustees and kept no records. The Board did issue a final list of burial rights to people who wished to be buried with loved ones. The last known burial, Honora Shea, was in September 1941. Since 1999, the Hopetoun Cemetery Preservation Group has worked to repair, maintain and to achieve Heritage listing for this memorial in Bacchus Marsh.
