Parsley Cemetery
Acton, Marion County, Indiana, USA
The burying ground, perhaps one of the oldest in Franklin Twp., is on a barren hilltop, north of Wildcat Run.
Only six burials are recorded. At the last visit noted, only one marker still stands, another is toppled into a brush area, & one is almost hidden in the grass covering the hilltop. Another stone leans against the standing stone.
An abstract for the property shows Abraham Messinger purchased 80 acres from the government in 1832, and owned it until September 2, 1834. Shortly before his death he deeded it to his son, John H. Messinger.
The size of the cemetery is unknown, its boundaries lost long ago. Among the few stones there, the earliest burial is 1834 and the latest, is that of John Parsley in 1887.
The Parsley Cemetery has been abandoned for many years.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 1, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (02 April 2005), gives the primary cemetery name as Parsley Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-49-30 (Parsley).
