The oldest Catholic Church on the Central Coast, it's origins date back to 1838 when a Pioneer of the district, Thomas Humphreys, donated a portion of land to Archbishop Polding, the first Bishop in Australia, for the building of Holy Cross Church. The burial ground contains the graves of many of the first settlers of the district, including Thomas Humphreys.
The Church was opened for Mass in 1842 and completed in 1843. Holy Cross is the fifth-oldest Catholic Church in continuous use in Australia. Erection of the stonework was completed in October 1842. Holy Cross Church is a beautiful venue for Catholic weddings, funerals, and special mass celebrations and can be booked for private use.
The cemetery is administered on a day-to-day basis by the Holy Cross Cemetery Management Committee, which under the direction of the Parish Priest, is responsible for the control of all normal cemetery activities, such as:
- The allocation of new burial/interment positions
- Establishing and implementing maintenance and administrative programs for the whole site
- Recording and updating the Holy Cross Cemetery Burial Register
