The Cemetery is in use since 1831. Some years before, the central government had forbidden burying in churches. The City of Deventer then bought land to build a cemetery, and exactly the ground where earlier, prior to the so-called Velvet Revolution of 1795, the gallows used to be located. The new cemetery accomodated 3100 graves, 2500 for Protestants and nos. 2501-3100 for Roman Catholics, until 1869 a Roman Catholic cemetery was founded. In 1894 the number became 4100.
