Mount Pleasant Cemetery lies within the Grand River Tract, which was granted to the Six Nations under the leadership of Captain Joseph Brant in 1784. Land for the public cemetery was granted in 1802 and the first recorded burial took place the same year.
It is the final resting place for many of the area's pioneer families. The oldest grave stones are located in the western section of the cemetery, where the majority of the markers are creamy marble with intricate designs. Many of these old markers are still readable.
A monument erected in 1931 by the descendants of the pioneers is situated at the southeast corner of the cemetery. As well, a plaque notes that there are United Empire Loyalists buried in the cemetery.
This is an active cemetery maintained by the County of Brant. It was designated in 2006, for its historic and architectural significance, under the Ontario Heritage Act.
