Construction of this church dates back to the 11th century, when a one-nave, early Romanic church was erected next to the former castle. Around 1240 the church was enlarged to a three-nave structure. The oldest monument inside the church can be found in the "Donor's Chapel", a double-tumba dating back to the 13th century.
The crypts were added in 1320, when Eberhard "The Illustrious", mmoved the remains of the nobles of Württemberg from Beutelsbach to Stuttgart. All dukes of Württemberg have been buried in the Stiftskirche since. There are about 100 nobles buried in the Stiftskirche. In the 15th century the church was rebuilt in a Gothic style, and given the look of a pseudobasilica. The towers were added then. In 1534 with the expanding Reformation the church becomes Lutheran.
Largely damaged during WW II, the Stiftskirche is rebuilt in the 1950's and has a bit of a modern interior. The crypts were reconstructed and the cenotaphs restaured. Some of them are now displayed in the main nave.
The church is now used by the central Lutheran congregation in Stuttgart.
