On 28 September 1850 the site was fixed for the Village of Murringo "in the Lachlan District". Only the Lands Department used this spelling, all other authorities used "Marengo" which persisted over the years, causing considerable confusion. Murringo was the resting place for teamsters travelling from Boorowa to the Bland. Many of the district's pioneers are buried here.
The General Cemetery was dedicated on 14 February 1873 and allotments 6 & 7 (Unsectarian and Presbyterian) were added on 22 August 1903. Located at the eastern end of the township on the Boorowa Road the cemetery is the last resting place of many of the early pioneers, notable among whom are William Kelly, original settler of Calabash and William Grounds, the pioneer of Belowra. The oldest marked graves are that of William West who is buried in the Anglican section, and James McNanamy who is buried in the Roman Catholic section. These two men were wilfully murdered on Saturday 1 October 1859 while they were out in the bush at Moppity at a place called Dead Horse Gully while fetching a load of shingles.
Although divided into two distinct denominational sections (originally by a netting fence), the graves in the Anglican section are arranged in a rather haphazard manner for which there seems no logical explanation.
The cemetery is under the care of the Hilltops Council which has maintained it in good condition.
The headstones are primarily upright and legible and there is no evidence of recent vandalism. There are no amenities on site. Unfortunately, there is no cemetery name sign and the portions and rows are also unmarked.
