The Pioneer Cemetery is located on Lasher Road, just North of 10 Mile on the East Side, Southfield. Upon the death of his daughter in 1832, John Thomas donated part of his farm to the township to form a public burying ground. He gave an adjacent parcel to the Presbyterians who built a church there in 1837. Although non-sectarian, the cemetery became known as the United Presbyterian Church Cemetery. In 1973, the cemetery was designated as a historical site by the Southfield Historical Society. Early settlers buried here include not only the John Thomas family but also John Parks, his wife and his daughter. It was John Parks who helped to organize the new Southfield Reformed Church, or Covenanters Church, but there was not a cemetery there ready for burials yet. All but seven graves date from the nineteenth century. The last interment (Margaret O.Stephens) was in 1926.
