Kingston Cemetery opened in January 1856 to relieve the overcrowded St Mary's Churchyard. Located in Fratton, at 52 acres, it is Portsmouth's largest cemetery. Its Neo-gothic twin chapels and entrance arch were designed by architect George Rake and the grounds laid out under the supervision of the Board surveyor Charles B Smith. It contains 570 Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars.
