Hitchin Cemetery was laid out by George Beaver and opened on 3 May 1857. The cemetery comprised a Lodge Cottage and originally two chapels (Anglican and non-Conformist) constructed at right angles with one another. The united chapel is still in use and can accommodate 50 mourners. The cemetery grounds were extended in 1879 and again in 1962.
The cemetery covers approximately 5.64 hectares, divided into three sections based on the age of the burials. The oldest part of the cemetery is by the Chapel in the north-eastern third of the site, which contain a large proportion of unmarked graves (those of pauper, children and workhouse inmates); to the southwest are ‘newer' graves. The cemetery holds 59 War Graves registered and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: 31 Commonwealth service personnel from World War I and 26 Commonwealth service personnel and two German Air Force personnel from World War II.
Management of the cemetery has successively been with Hitchin Local Board of Health, Hitchin Urban District Council (1894) and from 1974, North Hertfordshire District Council, who continue to manage the cemetery. There is no space for new burial plots, although re-opening of graves is permitted; there are limited spaces for interment of cremated remains.
