There has been a church on this site since the end of the 9th century. The first parish church is believed to have been a wooden edifice built in King Alfred's time, dedicated to St Cuthbert who was an illustrious Saxon Saint. The church was subsequently rebuilt in the 12th,13th and 15th centuries. There is an adjoining small mound which probably served as a burial ground even before the coming of Christianity.
The church played an important role in the movie ‘Hot Fuzz', which was filmed largely in Wells. In the church fete scene, Adam Buxton's character is dramatically killed by a falling part of the church tower. (In 1975, lightning caused a pinnacle to fall through the roof of the nave, which may have inspired the scene.)
