Head Memorial Cemetery
Port Perry, Durham Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada
"Head, or No. 1 Cemetery
The first settlers on Scugog Island purchased the land from Mr. Lundy in the late 1830's to establish a cemetery. William Rodman paid for his share with a pine tree as money was scarce. The church was built adjacent to the cemetery in 1860. They are called "Head" Church and Cemetery as they are located at the south end or head of the Island. Approximately 120 individuals were laid to rest here. The Island's original settlers including the Pickles', Thompsons', Schells', Fralicks' and Rodmans' are all represented. The earliest recorded burial was Mary Ann Henry in 1855. Many of the burials were not marked or tombstones have disappeared. The Scugog Head United Church Women's group erected this cairn in 1971 to display many of the fallen stones."
All of the headstones and memorials still remaining in the cemetery have been photographed.
