Stow Cemetery
Also known as John Stow Cemetery, Tobe Roane Cemetery
Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, USA
According to Lincoln Parish History, this cemetery was used as burial grounds for an early settler by the name of John Stow, who arrived in Louisiana in the early 1800s. The surrounding wall, which features a four-foot wall of flat iron rocks and a heavy iron gate with carved images of flowers, was built by men and women enslaved by the Stow family.
By the time this cemetery was visited in 1950 by researchers, it was overgrown and neglected. A brick walking path had crumbled, the iron gate would no longer open, and grass and weeds grew in many places. Many of the grave markers still stood, showing "lavish" and "expensive" markers, with some having marble slab tops and featuring ornate carvings. There were unknown graves found as well, marked only by mounds of bricks and one old cedar stump.
This small cemetery is located approx. 6 miles northeast of Ruston, LA on LA Hwy 33. It is on the east side of the road about 300-400 yards out in a pasture belonging to the Max King cattle ranch. A small dirt road leads down to the cemetery. You must then walk through two metal gates to reach the cemetery. Since there are cattle in the pasture please be sure to leave each gate closed and latched to keep cattle out of the cemetery.
