Hermon Baptist Chapel Graveyard
Also known as Hermon Cemetery
Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, Wales
The original Hermon Baptist chapel building and cemetery were built in 1821 on a piece of land donated by Mr Benjamin Price, a landowner from Ffoesmaen. Services had previously been held in a private house. In 1895 the chapel bought additional burial ground for £250. This and the original space is what we know today as Hermon Cemetery.
Nantyglo medical centre is now on the site of the old chapel which was demolished in 1987, the graveyard is opposite the plaque and under the care of trustees. Many of the gravestones are unreadable.
Hermon Cemetery Trust was founded in 2016 and members have worked very hard to clear overgrown hedges, long grass and rubbish after years of neglect after the chapel closed. About half of the graveyard is now quite accessible although the older half is still quite difficult to explore due to uneven ground, broken graves and long grass. It is hard to tell from the photo how difficult it actually is! Some headstones have decayed making the inscriptions illegible and many are broken. There are also many plots (up to 50%) that have probably never had a headstone, possibly because many local families would not have been able to afford one. Many headstones are written in Welsh.
