This cemetery is sometimes referred to as Indian Cemetery in Ogema Township. It is located on Stevens Lake, next to the Mille Lacs Band Aazhoomog Community Center. The lake was named was named after Chief James (Ne bah ge shig) Stevens of the Mille Lacs Band of the Ojibwa Tribe.
In the pre to middle 1900's there was an Indian village near the cemetery which was called the Aazhoomog (Crossroads)Village. There was also a village not far from there on the Tamarac and St. Croix River which was called "Sah giing" which means "where the water comes out". There were many other villages scattered in the area near logging camps and railroads where the men found work. On the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River is the St. Croix Indian village in Swiss township, Danbury, Burnett County.
The people of these villages married and lived at times on both sides of the St. Croix River and have become known as the Ojibwe of the St. Croix River. The Danbury Indian Cemetery is located in Burnett County where many of these people are also buried.
