It is thought that a church has stood on this spot for some 1400 years. The first written evidence is contained in the Domesday Book - "1086 In Farnham, Gospatrick has 3 Carncates of land to be taxed - land to one plough - there is now a priest and a church and one plough."
This refers to an earlier Saxon Church.
The oldest part of the present building is the chancel which dates from c1180.
In 1854 major repairs were carried out including the rebuilding of the south wall and porch and re-roofing. This work was carried out under the direction of Sir Gilbert Scott and paid for entirely by the vicar, Rev. Thomas Collins of Knaresborough.
A Mrs Bruce whose mother-in-law was able to recall the exciting day in 1854 when the church was reopened after its restoration. "There were horses and carriages all over the green and country gentlemen from all around, and many went after the opening to the Crown Inn opposite."
