Old Florence Cemetery
Florence, Drew County, Arkansas, USA
Old Florence was once a community with a Presbyterian Church and cemetery located on approximately 4 acres of land, which was part of The Kirby Place. It is not known if the land was donated by the Kirby's but it is now property of Presbyterians in Monticello, AR. The church was taken apart and moved to New Florence in 1890 and is approximately 4 miles West. There was an African American cemetery adjoining the white cemetery, which was fenced into a pasture by Richard Pittman, son-in-law of Mr. Kirby. The headstones were eventually destroyed. It was thought to be a slave cemetery. This was told to Mrs. V. G. Moore by Ruth Posey Smith who lived near Old Florence in her young years. The grounds surrounding the burial locations were cleared in April 2021 giving better access to the graves' locations. The old Cumberland Presbyterian building location was located close to the highway in the southeast portion of the cemetery survey.
