St. Asaph Cathedral

The church was founded in 560 as a Celtic monastery in Llanelwy [St Asaph's Welsh name, meaning the sacred religious enclosure on the banks of the River Elwy] by Saint Kentigern, Bishop of Strathclyde. When Kentigern returned to Strathclyde in 573 he left the monastery in the hands of his favourite pupil, Saint Asaph who became Bishop.
