Harbour Town, with its signature light house and circular yacht basin is the focal point of Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island. The Harbour Town basin was originally designed to be round, but was redesigned to save the Liberty Oak, an ancient live oak of perfect size and shape.
Charles Fraser, the founder of Sea Pines Plantation and a committed environmentalist, is credited for Hilton Head Island being developed with sensitivity to the environment. Mr. Fraser died in 2002 and is buried next to the Liberty Oak.
The outdoor amphitheater that circles the eastern side of the oak is the site of Sunday church services and frequent concerts.
