About these numbers These percentages indicate the number of Find a Grave memorials that have a grave photo or GPS coordinates. We don't know the total number of burials in a cemetery, so we cannot calculate a percentage of those with memorials, photos or GPS coordinates.

Cemetery documented in Chicora Foundation's _The Silence of the Dead: Giving Charleston's Cemeteries a Voice_, p. 115. Apr. 2010.

Apparently opened around 1848 at 4 Columbus Street (see, e.g., 1861 Charleston City Council Census) by St. John's Lutheran for its congregants of color. Burial ground subsequently seized by the City of Charleston in 1935 for non-payment of streets/sidewalks tax. Current owner of the property is Zion Independent AME Church.

All of St. John's church records preceding the Civil War for both black and white congregants were lost during the War. The pre-war records here for the Lutheran Colored Cemetery have been abstracted from the South Carolina Death Records--Charleston available online at Ancestry.com. This abstract should be presumed incomplete, as many entries in the death records have no place of interment indicated.
