This monument reads: In memory of the brave settlers who fell at this point in the massacre of 1862.
Killed here were Rev. Christian L. Seder, and a Mr. Lettou (who had settled in this area) and Lettou's son. Dakota warriors attacked Seder's buggy, stealing horse and buggy. He was shot and robbed.
One month later the US Army burial detail buried victims from Renville County where they were killed. Mr. Lettou is still buried at this location. Seder was later reburied in the Cottonwood Township Evangelical Cemetery near Searles, Minnesota. Seder was a pastor for the Evangelical Association (which later became the United Methodist Church). He and his wife Ursula lived in New Ulm, Minnesota. He was responsible for two new congregations near Middlecreek as well as a congregation in New Ulm.
