The cemetery at Hill Road is a beautiful location for contemplation and remembrance.
It is no longer possible to purchase a plot at Hill Road Cemetery in advance of a bereavement. New plots are not available for purchase unless you are at the point of arranging a funeral and interment. All completed advance purchases, finalised prior to the introduction of this policy, remain fully valid.
Woodland Burial Area
This area of Hill Road Cemetery is laid out as a natural woodland burial site and as such all burials on this site will have all floral memorials buried with the coffin. There will be no markers or memorials on each plot. After each burial, the ground will be allowed to regrow to its original condition.
Memorial trees within this area of the cemetery should be kept in a condition in keeping with the woodland nature of the site and should not be adorned with lights, windchimes or charms. Potted plants around the base of memorial trees will be limited to one and should be made of a natural stone; plastics of any description will not be permitted.
The Town Council reserve the right to remove any items not adhering to these policies.
Main Burial Ground
Hill Road Cemetery is a lawned cemetery. Grave edgings, fencing and additional stones/ornaments that cover the grassed area are not permitted. Grave owners will be asked to remove any such items and failure to comply with this will result in the items being removed by Penwortham Town Council.
Plants, Flowers, or Trees should not be planted in Hill Road Cemetery without the written permission of the Town Council. Any plants, flowers or trees planted without permission will be removed.
Memorials on Cremated Remains plots should only be placed on the memorial tablet and should not be placed alongside the plot.
As part of the commitment to the Climate Change Emergency, Memorial Trees within this area of the cemetery should not be adorned with plastic decorations and potted plants at the base of the tree should preferably not be in plastic pots.
Penwortham Town Council is committed to reducing and phasing-out the use of single use plastic and encourage families to avoid choosing plastic flowers and wrappers to help the Town Council to achieve zero-waste plastic at Hill Road cemetery.
Floral memorials left on graves will be removed after one month by the cemetery staff.
