Muntok POW camp was used by the Japanese, to house those captured whilst attempting to flee Singapore in early 1942. The camp housed over 960 internees of whom at least 270 met their deaths from Maleria, Beri-beri, Dysentry, Tuberculosis and other ailments that took hold of the internees, who were suffering from systematic starvation, horrendously poor sanitation and ill-treatment.
Most were buried in a burial ground on the edge of the camp. A few of those buried, usually those associated with the military, were re-interred after the war ended in 1945 but most remained in the original site. The site has since been developed and a service station is now located over the burial ground where the graves are still intact.
