The United Presbyterian Church of North America was formed in 1858 when most of the congregations of the Associate Presbyterian Church, nicknamed the "Seceders," united with much of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church to form the United Presbyterian Church.


The Norris Square United Presbyterian Church began as a Sunday school ministry by the Third United Presbyterian Church in 1858 shortly after the merging of Philadelphia's Associate and Associate Reformed congregations. On September 7th, 1860, the Ninth United Presbyterian Church, with Reverend James Crowe as ruling elder, was officially established on the northwest corner of Norris Square. Due to its location, the church became known as the Norris Square United Presbyterian Church, or "Crowe's Church," after its longtime pastor.


The Norris Square church contained a receiving vault for members. It was used to temporarily hold the remains of congregants that were being buried at other cemeteries, or when the ground was too frozen to open a grave. Many burials listed in obituaries and records as being made here were most likely intended to be nothing more than temporary, and all final interments occurred elsewhere.


In 1983, the United Presbytery officially united with the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America to become the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).


Today, the church houses the Presbyterian West Kensington Ministry.
