Hinton Pioneer Cemetery is located at 289 Hinton Road, in Hinton. The cemetery is maintained by the Port Stephen's Council.
This is an historic cemetery, set in a rural environment among the farm paddocks that back onto the Hinton township. The graves date from the 1800's and there are many unmarked graves and illegible headstones. While there are no clearly visible religious sections, according to a newspaper report on 1.3.1897, a portion of it was set apart for nonsectarian burials.
Hinton was once a thriving town with a wheat growing industry and three mills, three hotels, a court house, Presbyterian church, vineyards, blacksmith forge, coach-building works, School of Arts, and nearby jam and broom factories. The school at Hinton, established 1848, remains one of the four schools in the Newcastle region that is on its original site and still operating using some of the original buildings. Hinton now-a-days is a small but community focused town that is subject to isolation due to flooding in periods of heavy rain. During these times the local rescue services bring kegs of beer by boat to the one remaining historic hotel.
