Opened in 1846, the cemetery was the property of a company of shareholders mostly Wesleyan Methodists and Unitarians.
In 1856, the cemetery had not been consecrated and only dissenting ministers officated there. It was transferred to the Urban District Council in 1899.
In the centre of the cemetery there was an octagonal Chapel built of grey bricks bearing the name - Tomlinson - whose brickyard was at Walkeringham.
