During the 19th and 20th century a cemetery stood at the corner of Spruce Street and Forest Ave where the current First Presbyterian Church now stands. Much like the nearby cemetery that once was located where Stewart Hall now stands, this cemetery was removed due to encroaching development in the downtown area and to provide space for the new church. It is assumed that where feasible, grave contents were relocated to nearby Oak Grove Cemetery, but most graves would have been quite old even at that time. Ultimately, many of the headstones were not transferred but instead were recycled into a retaining wall on the property. It should be assumed that bodily remains are no longer present and that this tomb wall acts as memorial to the early families of Monongalia County. -Nicolas Laraway 10/22/2023
