Consecrated on 24 October 1843 by Bishop William Grant Broughton — the first and only Bishop of Australia — this pre-gold rush parish graveyard is one of only four remaining churchyards in Victoria. It predates the Brighton General Cemetery by over a decade and served as the district's major burial ground in its early years. More than 300 burials took place, mostly before 1860. The last burial occurred in 1948; an adjoining garden of remembrance established in 1953 remains in use.

The graveyard forms part of the St Andrew's Church Precinct — one of the earliest Christian sites in the Port Phillip District, established before both the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne and the Colony of Victoria itself. The precinct is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as significant to the State of Victoria.
