Tingwall Church dates back to the 12th century, though the original building is mostly gone. Originally it was named St. Magnus Church, and was one of three steeple churches in Shetland. This building survived five to six hundred years, and part of this building may be seen in the burial crypt adjacent to the church.
The Archdeacon of Tingwall was in charge of all Christianity in Shetland. This office dated from 1215 AD until 1690 when Presbyterianism was established in Scotland.
The present building opened for worship in November 1790, making it the second oldest church building in regular use in Shetland (the oldest being at Lunna).
A war memorial is in the churchyard to honor Tingwall citizens who were killed or missing during World War I & II.
