Cassilis was named after a district and castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. In the late 19th century, at the peak of the gold boom, it was a thriving mining centre and home to more than 500 people.

Cassilis Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery with its reserve gazetted in 1877. While the earliest headstone dates to 1884, it may contain around 200 burials, possibly including those from a nearby undeveloped cemetery at Swifts Creek. The cemetery has limited surviving headstones due to vandalism.

Recent geophysical surveys have identified potential grave sites which have been marked with pavers. The cemetery trust are considering re-opening for burials.
