St Martin's was founded in 1867 by Ann Hudson, the owner of Brabyn's Hall in Marple, who wished to establish a church where Anglo-Catholic ceremonial would be observed.

The church was designed by John Dando Sedding, an influential figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, and contains works by William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown. The main building opened in 1870 with a lady chapel being added in 1895 and north aisle in 1909.

The graveyard is to the rear of the church from Brabyns Brow entrance.
