The Smith/Rudyard family burial ground, located on the property of the Museums at Stony Brook, was part of the Smith family homestead for most of the 18th and 19th centuries. As was the custom of the time, the burying ground was situated on an incline, not too far from the road or the main house. The bodies were buried with the feet facing east and the rising sun, symbolic of the resurrection. When gravestones were erected the inscriptions faced west on headstones and east on footstones.

Most of the 32 gravestones c1796-1865 are white marble except the earliest ones which were made of brownstone. At this time 32nd burial unknown.
