St James' is part of the historical precinct of Kerikeri, at the upper end of the Kerikeri Inlet. It holds a top Historic Place Category 1 listing by Heritage New Zealand. This means it is of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance or value to New Zealand. The church is dedicated to St James the Great of Compostela, whose symbol is the scallop shell, and is associated with the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. It is part of the Anglican Church of Aotearoa in the Diocese of Auckland.
The first St James' chapel was started in November 1823 and opened some 6 months later, but this was not on the present site. The second was built on the site around 1829 and fell into disrepair after the church was disbanded in 1848. The present building was built onsite and opened on 5th December 1878. An extension was added in 1963.
There are few plots left in the cemetery and they are reserved for those who have been active members of the church for over five years. Due to the restrictions on new burials, the Sue Read Memorial Wall was erected in 2012 for parishioners to be memorialised with plaques. Revered Sue Read had been involved with St James for more than 30 years.
