When Mennonites settled the East Reserve, in what is now the Rural Municipality of Hanover, farms were set up in small villages with communally-owned fields and pasturelands arranged in long narrow farmsteads. The result was a large number of towns with graveyards. By 1920, most of these villages no longer existed. This site southeast of Grunthal was a graveyard for one of the villages, Kronsgart (aka Kronstgart or Kronstgard). (Source: Manitoba Historical Society [Adapted])
Dominion Land Survey coordinates: LSD5-02-05-05-E1
Located NW of the town site of Barkfield, MB, about midway between it and the town of New Bothwell, MB, about 250 m (330 yards) east of Spenser North Road (Provincial Road 28E)
A part of the story of the town and its inhabitants from the early days of European settlement from about 1874 through roughly 1910 is told in the volume "Historical Sketches of the East Reserve 1874-1910", especially starting on page 153.
A digital version of this and many other Manitoba local history books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections.
