Circa 1840. John Whichcord architect. Built in the Early English style in ragstone ashlar. West tower and spire.
Dedicated to Saint Stephen, it became redundant in 1978.
Pronounced Tovvul, despite the 19th century Kentish Dialect by Parish and Shaw, which lists 'Tovil (pron. Toavil): a measure of capacity and possibly a corruption of two (or twice) fill.' In other words, two fillings of a particular measure.

Once a bustling mill village, its riverside busy with barges, Tovil is now one of the more sadly frayed edges of Maidstone. St Stephen's church, which has left its name to Church Street, was declared redundant and closed in 1982 and now only a few headstones remain to mark the spot where it once stood.
