DEATH OF DANIEL SIMMONS.- We regret to announce the death of Mr. D. Simmons, the well -known axe manufacturer of Cohoes, and one of the prominent citizens of that place. Mr. S. Has long been identified with the principal business interest of Cohoes, and was a very generally respected for his worth and uprightness of character.
Report by R. Arthur Johnson. Reported in 9/30/1978 & 11/04/1978.
Located in a field, about 200 yards on rise, northeast of old Simmons (1847), known locally as Phoenix house. Originally enclosed by large stones. Only Tombstones found. Probably descendants buries elsewhere. All stones are marble with raised lettering (except the link-script). Vandals have smashed the stones. Impossible to learn why the Link grave was dug. Old shovel still under the tree. Dug years ago. Cemetery slopes on all sides except the south, probably the entrance. History of Cohoes: page 273. Daniel Simmons died Dec. 29, 1860, age 58. Was the first to engage in business in Cohoes, and to his industry and enterprise the place is largely indebted for its reputation as a manufacturing town. Beginning in a small way the manufacture of axes and edge tools in 1835, he, in a few years, succeeded in building up an establishment which was one of the most important of its kind in the country. History of Cohoes: page 270. Baltheus Simmons died Dec. 25, 1852 ages 52. He appears to have been a brother of Daniel. The Cemetery is rather large for just a few burials. I wonder if there might have been others. Half mile east of Boght Corners _ SIMMONS CEMETERY- Manor Ave., TWP of Colonie
