Add PhotosBuilt in 1835 by the brothers Thomas and Samuel Banbury, tiny Copthorne Chapel is surrounded by a churchyard, the front of which is enclosed by a low stone wall.
Built of stone and cob, the Chapel fortunately is classified as a Grade II listed building by English Heritage, as on 29 June 2014, the final religious service was held there and the Chapel's doors were closed for good.
The grave markers of its former parishioners have been transcribed by Karen Start and listed in a free searchable document you may download at the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks's website www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/n_p/north_petherwin.php (look for 'Memorial Inscriptions: Methodist Chapels').
Among those resting in this churchyard are both Banbury brothers, whose markers memorialize their efforts of so long ago.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From Launceston Town Centre, proceed NORTH on the A388/St. Thomas Road. Upon reaching the roundabout at Newport, continue STRAIGHT AHEAD up St. Stephen's Hill and through St Stephens. Continue along the B3254 towards Bude, passing through the hamlet of Yeolmbridge. After a few miles you'll be at the junction at Langdon Cross, where you'll take the LEFT hand turning towards North Petherwin. Proceed to the centre of the village and turn RIGHT at the main crossroads. Continue heading out of the village until reaching a RIGHT hand fork posted COPTHORNE. Follow this road for approximately one mile to the hamlet of Copthorne. Copthorne Chapel will be on your RIGHT.
Directly across the road is 'Hyssop House,' formerly the Chapel's Sunday School. When the school building was found to be redundant in the last century, it was greatly expanded and converted into a private home.
