The Kilmore Catholic Cemetery is a separate entity to the Kilmore Public Cemetery and as such should does not come under the management of the Public Cemetery
Kilmore Catholic Cemetery opened in the 1870's, the Catholic grounds were developed to serve the growing Catholic community, with first burials occurring around 1870.
Irish Pioneer Roots: the cemetery holds the remains of many early Irish Catholic settlers, reflecting Kilmore's history as a hub for Irish immigrants.
Kilmore's first settlers in 1841 are buried at the southern end of the Cemetery, namely Laurence & Mary Kelly who died in 1879 & 1880. Also interred in the same section is Thomas Moore, Governor of the Kilmore Gaol from 1870 to 1872. He died August 1872.
Private Status: In 1968, the cemetery was made private by Monsignor Ken Morrison, distinguishing it further from the public grounds next door. Monsignor Morrison died in 1990 and is buried in a separate section with Brothers of the Catholic order. There is a new Lawn section under development.
