Litten is a dialect word deriving from Old English ‘līċ tūn', literally meaning ‘corpse ground'. The burial ground known locally as Church Litten was established following an outbreak of plague in 1583. It became the churchyard for the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, Newport - now known as Newport Minster - which is around 150m to the north. It was closed for most burials in the 1850s, with an exception for family vaults, the last such interment taking place in 1897. In 1955, most of the stones and vaults were destroyed to turn the cemetery into a public park, and only a few stones remain, along with the memorial to the chimney sweep Valentine Gray.
