"SUPREME COURT—RENSSELAER COUNTY.—James B. Jermain, plaintiff, against Melvin E. Sharpe and Mary E. Sharpe, his wife, William Sharpe and George N. Sharpe and Hane Sharpe, his wife, Elizabeth Craver and Thomas Coughlin, as executor of the last will and testament of Joseph Loop, deceased, John Hayner, Isaiah Shortsleeves and George N. Sharpe and William S. Betts, as executors of the last will and testament of Bernhard U. Sharpe, deceased, defendants. [...]
"excepting a piece of land seventy-four feet square, with a right of way one rod wide from the public highway to the same to be forever set apart at a burial ground."
Troy Daily Times. April 14, 1893: 4 col 8.
"It is within our lifetime that Second Street, Lansingburgh, now 102nd Street, was formerly called Van Schaick Street and that was the northern boundary of the old Van Schaick farm, which spread out over the hill and included most of Albia, and if one should drive out Winter Street, Troy, and take the first country road to the south, which later joins the New York post road, one would observe at this time before the summer foliage screens its view, a few hundred feet south of Winter Street, and to the right of the road, a small burying ground with a fence enclosing it. This is the old burying grounds of the Van Schaick farm and in it may be found the tablets of [...] the Van Schaicks, particularly Garret Van Schaick, whose name is preserved for Trojans in the old firm name of G. V. S. Quackenbush & Co., the founder of that department store business having been named for [him]."
"Window Unveiled in Memory of Two Trojans; Service Held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, With Dedicatory Sermon By Rev. Dr. Fairlee." Troy Times. March 14, 1927: 5 col 5.
"The small, private cemetery is in an area where the city plans to install a new road to the landfill from the North Greenbush side of the dump. […]
"[A witness] first noticed the fence and gravestones missing in May [1996], but he found many of the stones piled up next to a nearby pond and returned them to the small hill at the back of the landfill. […] He also made a videotape of the gravestones to make sure there was a record of their presence.
"Last week [he] returned to find the stones again missing — but nowhere in sight. A few pieces of shattered gravestones lie about on the hill, and one base can be seen in the ground."
O'Brien, Tim. "Gravestones missing from Troy Cemetery; Fence, too, is removed from place of rest for graves near landfill." Albany Times Union. August 8, 1996: B1, B6.
If there was no criminal investigation of the destruction reported in the 1996 article, one has to wonder why.
