Alberton Cemetery is located on Yarram-Port Albert Rd in the suburb of Alberton, Gippsland off the Albert River. The cemetery itself has some of the earliest settlements in Gippsland and the earliest burials in Victoria, with its earliest headstone for Robert McClure dating to 1842. The cemetery was reserved in 1860 in an area with native grasslands and now has 1,300 known graves. Many early headstones were carved from sandstone, however some have since eroded and aren't readable. Overall, the Alberton Cemetery and its area shows the difficult times faced by early settlers and their courage and determination. They also host guided walking tours for the cemetery which includes chats and facts about those buried here.
