There are two adjacent graveyards at Fenagh Abbey; the old graveyard, Fenagh Abbey Within, which lies within the boundary walls of the ruined church, and the new cemetery, Fenagh Abbey Without, which abuts but lies outside of that boundary wall.

Both lie within the boundaries of the Abbey that once stood here, which is listed as LE029-003 in the Irish national monument archaeological survey.

Fenagh Abbey was founded by St. Caillin in the 6th century and according to the ‘Annals of the Four Masters' was "celebrated for its divinity school, which was resorted to by students from every part of Europe". The Book of Fenagh was completed here in 1516 and community life continued until 1652, when Cromwellian soldiers sacked it, and it was further damaged by cannon fire during the Williamite wars in 1690. The last service was said in 1729. The church built thereon, now a ruin, was vacated in 1787 when the Church of Ireland built the nearby St Catherine's parish church.
