Uspensko Cemetery
Uspensko, an Orthodox cemetery, was established in 1860. It is located in Novosadski sajma street.
In 1921, the remains of citizens were transferred from the Jovanovski cemetery, some of them were buried in common graves, and some in individual graves. In the same year, 1921, St. St. John's Church, and the chapel at Assumption Cemetery was built from that material. The area of the cemetery is about 4 ha.
By passing the decision on burials and cemeteries ("Official Gazette of the Municipality of Novi Sad", 11/91), this cemetery was reopened for burials. Burials started again, but only in the existing family burial places. This means that only relatives of deceased persons who are already resting in this cemetery, namely spouses, blood relatives in the first line up to and including the fourth degree of consanguinity, as well as spouses of these persons could be buried at Uspenski cemetery. It is decorated with many monumental and valuable monuments of the Polit-Desančić family, then the Batut, Vilovac and other families.
The monument on the common grave of those transferred from the Jovanovski cemetery in 1921 has a special artistic and architectural value. In this cemetery there is a common grave built for prisoners who died during the First World War.
One part of the cemetery is called the Russian plot, where Russian emigrants of the Orthodox faith are buried.
Burials were held at Assumption Cemetery until 1974, and ten years later the City Institute for the Restoration of Architectural Heritage and Protection of Cultural Monuments placed the cemetery under protection.
According to the data, from 1962 to the present, around 4,400 deceased were buried at the cemetery.
