Located in the heart of Lerwick, this small triangle-shaped cemetery is bounded by Knab Road, Breiwick Road, and Lover's Loan. By 1829 the old Lerwick kirkyard burial ground had been filled and the need for a new cemetery in Lerwick was recognized. This cemetery was designed in 1831 and burials in it were accepted starting in 1834 or 1835. It contains about 450 known burials in large family plots that line the cemetery walls as well as individual burials marked by headstones in the middle of the cemetery.

The cemetery also contains a row of 19 older headstones that were moved into the cemetery in 1967 from the old Queens Lane Yard / Church Road graveyard due to improvements. These headstones mainly date between 1800 and 1830 and thus are the oldest headstones in the cemetery.
