The old church of St. Mark, erected in 1749, was a small plain building, with a turret containing one bell, and was replaced in 1877 by the erection of a new church at a cost of £6,282, it was consecrated in 1877 and is in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch, and a turret containing the bell formerly in the old church and dated 1749, with the initials "T.S."
The chancel was added in 1882. There is a stained window on the south side in memory of George Herbert Sykes, erected in 1878, and the east window, erected in 1900, is a memorial to Crossland Hirst of Longwood. One of the central columns of the old church, a shaft about 7 feet in height, with a moulded capital, has been left standing in the churchyard as a memorial of the building of which it once formed a part.
There is a sundial on the south side of the church dated 1749, with the following inscription, - Joseph Miller fecit, Lat 53.37 Long 26.15 west, Benjamin Hanson et Joseph Sykes Refec 1829. There are 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1797. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £208, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Vicar of Huddersfield, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Walter Henry Verity M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge.
