Bassett Cemetery
Also known as Kappa Cemetery, Lower Settlement Cemetery
Poplar Grove, Howard County, Indiana, USA
It was located at the south edge of Section 9 of T 24-2-E about a mile south of the Deer Creek's South Fork.
Bassett Settlement was predominantly African American farming families who established their own church, school, store and blacksmith shop before the start of the Civil War. Some of the members were ex-slaves from the south, from Canada, and some were never slaves.
Records indicate many of the families had to mortgage their properties for medical or other expenses and eventually lost their farms when unable to repay their loans and moved to Kokomo.
Rush or the Upper Settlement was up river to the east of Bassett.
