The church and burial ground were opened in 1844. In 1870 the church needed to expand to add a school and some of the remains needed to be removed. They purchased Section 130 at Mount Moriah Cemetery, but the burial ground remained open until the early 1900's when the Board of Health condemned the property. In 1905 a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer (3 Oct 1905 page 6) states "The remains of 500 people who were buried in the old Wharton Street M. E. Church burial ground to be moved to a plot at West Laurel Hill Cemetery....." According to Burying Grounds in Philadelphia records from the tombstone were kept by the cemetery.
