At 5.5 hectares, this is the third largest cemetery in Heidelberg. It was founded in 1826 on the outskirts of town, as the old Evangelical Cemetery in Kirchheim had to be closed for health reasons. The cemetery chapel dates for 1907 and was designed by Architekt Eirich and expanded in 1921 and 1987/1988. It was renovated in 2005. The cemetery itself was expanded in the 1950s due to the Bergfriedhof in central Heidelberg reaching capacity. There is a memorial for the war dead here. The cemetery is also the final resting place of a number of Russian forced laborers, who died in captivity nearby.
